Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like you?

  • Taking the stairs one at a time, leading with your good leg
  • Your knee giving out or buckling without warning
  • Swelling that shows up hours after a walk or a workout
  • Skipping the garden bed, or the floor with your kids, because kneeling isn’t worth it
  • That sharp catch going from sitting to standing
  • Steering clear of running or squatting because you already know how it’ll feel

Why It Happens

Knee pain is a symptom. Something causes it.

Your knee doesn’t hurt for no reason. And it’s almost never just one thing. It’s usually some mix of a few culprits: the kneecap tracking slightly off its groove. Weak quads or hips that let your knee absorb load it was never meant to carry alone. Irritation in the meniscus or a ligament that never fully calmed down. And too many miles or reps piled onto a joint that hasn’t had the chance to recover.

None of that shows up on a quick glance. It takes a real, cause-first evaluation to sort out which one is actually driving your knee pain. That’s why rest, ice, or a generic stretching sheet so often falls short: they treat the symptom, not the source. Find the real cause, and the fix gets obvious.

The Honest Truth

Waiting on a knee doesn’t make it wait on you.

If you keep waiting

  • You start avoiding stairs and activity altogether, just to dodge the pain
  • Your hips and back start picking up the slack, and start hurting too
  • Swelling that used to be rare starts showing up after almost everything

If you start this week

  • You know the actual cause by the end of visit one
  • Hands-on relief starts before you leave the building
  • You get a plan with an endpoint: a real one, not an open tab of visits

Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for your knee.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for a knee.

Weeks 1–2

Pain

Calm the pain and swelling.

Hands-on techniques calm the swelling and take the edge off irritation around your knee, starting your very first visit.

Weeks 2–6

Prime

Get your motion back.

Targeted mobility work restores the range of motion your knee lost while it’s been guarding itself.

Weeks 6–10

Perform

Make it strong enough to trust.

Progressive quad and hip strengthening rebuilds the support your knee was missing in the first place.

Weeks 10+

Prevent

Return better than before.

Running, stair, and sport mechanics get tested under real load before you’re cleared to go all-in: that’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.

I worked with Dr. Brad for a 4-5 weeks before moving cross country for college. He helped me manage my knee pain faster and greater than any other physical therapist had before. He has such a wonderful character, I really enjoyed spending my hour with him while he did his healing techniques. He went above and beyond for me, and I cannot thank him enough!

Before: knee pain other physical therapists hadn’t been able to resolve

4-5 weeks in: faster, greater progress than any PT before, right before her move across the country

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for knee pain.

Usually not, and it’s rarely the first step. Most knee pain improves without imaging, and studies consistently find meniscus tears and other “wear and tear” on MRIs of people who have zero knee pain at all, so a scan doesn’t always point to the real cause. We start with a hands-on evaluation to find what’s actually driving your symptoms, and if imaging ever becomes genuinely necessary, we’ll help you get it. You don’t have to wait on a scan to start feeling better.

Yes, in most cases movement helps more than rest does. Hurt doesn’t always mean harm, total rest tends to make a knee stiffer and weaker, which sets up the next flare-up. The key is dosing the right movement, including your return to running, for your specific knee, which is exactly what a Doctor of PT sorts out at your evaluation, then progresses safely as you improve.

Most patients feel meaningful change within 4–6 visits. A full plan for knee pain runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, typically over 8–10 weeks, depending on how long you’ve been dealing with it. Either way, you get a plan with an endpoint: you’ll always know which phase you’re in and what’s left, not an open-ended string of appointments.
