How Medicare covers physical therapy

Medicare Part B covers outpatient physical therapy that’s medically necessary. If you have a condition, injury, or functional limitation that requires skilled physical therapy to treat, your visits at Focus PT are eligible for coverage.

Medicare Part B (most common): outpatient physical therapy at our Louisville clinic is billed under Part B. After you meet your annual deductible, Medicare typically covers 80% of the approved amount for each session; you’re responsible for the remaining 20% unless a Medigap plan covers that cost share.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap): these plans help cover the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare doesn’t pay. Depending on your plan, your visits at Focus PT may have little to no out-of-pocket cost.

Not sure which type of Medicare you have? Original Medicare (Part B) is provided directly through the federal government and is the plan we accept at Focus PT. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private insurance alternative, and we are not currently in-network for Medicare Advantage plans. Do you need a referral to see us under Medicare?

In Kentucky, patients have direct access to physical therapy, meaning you don’t need a physician referral to be evaluated and treated here. Medicare does require that your care be medically necessary and properly documented; if your doctor has already recommended physical therapy, bringing that documentation to your first visit helps us streamline the process. If you’re coming in on your own, our licensed therapists will conduct a thorough evaluation and document your condition to Medicare’s requirements. We handle that on our end.
