Low Back Pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at Focus Physical Therapy. We’re experts in low back pain and sciatica, which are closely related. I’ve had a lot of back pain myself, so I know how it feels firsthand. The sad reality is that we’re all probably going to have low back pain at some time in our lives. The good news is that we can all get better if we take the right approach!
One of the first main causes for low back pain is sitting. Sitting is one of the worst things you can do for your back. Our bodies are not made to sit for long periods of time. We have to sit down for our jobs and we have to drive, but activities like this that promote sitting are hard on our backs. It puts us in a flattened position, which puts more pressure on our discs, joints and gives our body a whole lot of extra stress that it can’t really handle.
The second cause is inactivity. We’re made to move! We’re made to get up and do things, so even though we do have to sit a lot in our lives for driving, school, jobs, etc, being inactive is one of the reasons why so many of us have back problems. Not all, but most back conditions do really well if we just get up and walk. Get up, move and stretch.
The third most common cause of low back pain is bending and lifting incorrectly. People think that if you bend over at your waist that it’s horrible for your back. We know we need to use our legs when we bend, but actually the biggest issue when hurting our back is reaching out. If you’re reaching out to put one of your kids in a car seat, you’re reaching out to make your bed, you’re reaching out to do your dishes, you’re reaching to vacuum, those are some of the most common ways that you’ll get back pain.
As far as back pain, auto accidents and falls are the most common causes. These are more severe causes, but it actually does help us to have a clear reason as to why you began having back pain. From a patient’s first appointment following an accident, we put our all into assuring a speedy and stress free recovery. We also accept PIP insurance to make to that much easier!
